Origin of the Foundation

The Foundation was established in 2007 by the general assembly of the Maximilian-Kolbe-Werk with the agreement of the Polish and the German Bishops’ Conferences. After termination of the process of compensation for forced labourers in church institutions during World War II, the German Bishops’ Conference has provided the Foundation with the surplus funds for its activities. In order to emphasize the joint responsibility for remembrance and reconciliation, the Polish Bishops’ Conference has also made a considerable endowment contribution.
